Dec 26- Jan 1. African- American family observance created in 1966 by Dr. Manulana Karenga in recognition of traditional African Harvest festivals. This seven-day festival stressed the unity of the black family, with harvest fest (karamu) on the first day and a day of meditation the final one. Kwanzaa means “first fruit” in Swahili.
