Built in 1938 by a nationally recognized architect – Roy Benjamin (who also built the beautiful Florida Theatre). When designing the San Marco Theatre, Benjamin, having to keep up with current trends, dropped the Moorish, Spanish and Italianate designs and converted to Art Deco.
Painter Davis Cone felt compelled to paint the theatre and include it in his book Popcorn Palaces. Not only is this theatre featured in his book, but it was recognized by USA Today as one of the ten best classic cinemas in the USA.
David and Sue Blue took over the business 18 years ago and worked to help restore the interior to reflect the thematic elements of the architecture. Unlike the normal fare you receive at your local Multi-plex, the San Marco provides you with freshly made pizzas, sandwiches, nachos, quesadillas, great beer and wine.
We would like to hear any personal stories you may want to share with us. We wish to put together an oral history of the theatre. Please e-mail us with your story, and let us know if you would be interested in being recorded telling us your experience.
